Reforestation

Sustainable forest management in Mexico is based on the implementation of natural resource management practices designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of forest ecosystems. Its primary objective is to maintain healthy and productive forest stands capable of providing a continuous supply of timber while optimizing production processes to meet the needs of society and both domestic and international markets. Modern forest management also seeks to preserve biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, and ecosystem vitality while safeguarding the ecological and socioeconomic functions of forests at the local, national, and international levels, ensuring the continued provision of environmental goods and services for future generations (Aguirre, as cited in López, 2021).

To carry out sustainable pine resin harvesting in Mexico, landowners and producers must prepare a simplified forest management plan, conduct a technical study supporting the sustainable use of the resource, and submit the required notification to Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT). Once authorized, harvesting activities are documented through an official logbook and identification code that certify the legal origin and traceability of the resin (DOF, 2018).

According to SEMARNAT’s Basic Manual of Reforestation Practices, reforestation is defined as the set of activities involved in planning, implementing, monitoring, and supervising every stage of tree planting to ensure the successful establishment and long-term sustainability of forest ecosystems.

Since 2019, approximately 30,000 pine seedlings have been distributed to the communities that supply us with pine resin to support the reforestation of areas affected by wildfires, illegal logging, and ongoing land-use change throughout the state of Michoacán.
